Carr staffer nominated for FCC commissioner

President Trump on Friday nominated Danielle Thumann, senior counsel to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr, to serve as commissioner on the FCC. If confirmed by the Senate, Thumann would fill one of two vacant seats on the commission.

As Carr’s staffer handling consumer protection issues, Thumann has played a leading role in Carr’s efforts to ensure all actors in the calling ecosystem take steps to prevent the origination and transmission of illegal calls.  The FCC has advanced American Bankers Association-backed proposals to impose stronger “know your customer” requirements on originating providers and “know your upstream provider” requirements on providers receiving calls from other providers.

Thumann previously served as legal advisor for Carr’s office from 2021 to 2023. Before rejoining the FCC, Thumann was senior attorney, government relations, for the telecommunications firm Crown Castle.
